What Causes Charlie Horse Leg Cramps?

The exact causes of a charlie horse or leg cramps are not completely defined. Contributing factors related to the cramps, once identified, can be observed to alleviate or eliminate leg cramps.

    • Contributing factors to leg cramps can stem from improper exercise techniques, dehydration, medications and electrolyte imbalance. The cramps result from contractions of the leg muscles. Muscle contractions occur suddenly and can last up to a minute. Leg cramps are more common in teenagers and older adults, although they can afflict anyone at any age.

    Exercise

    • When exercising it is important to stretch before your workout; warming up the muscles prior to stretching is important and can be accomplished by walking or light jogging. Concentrate stretching the muscles most used during your workout. Be sure to include a cool-down period when your exercise routine is finished, again by walking or light jogging.

    Hydration

    • Because charlie horse leg cramps can be caused by low electrolytes, ensure you are properly hydrated-with the right liquids. Sports drinks are desirable after workouts since they are designed to introduce electrolytes such as potassium and sodium into your system. Drinking two to three glasses of water before and during a workout is advisable.

    Prevention/Solution

    • If you develop a leg cramp you can stretch the muscle slowly and gently massage it until the cramp subsides.

    • If you experience regular leg cramps not associated to known contributing factors and they are not eased by suggested techniques, see your doctor as it could be a sign of a more serious medical condition.
