How to Remedy Hip Problems

Hip problems can be painful and debilitating. As major joints, your hips facilitate a variety of movements and positions, from walking to sitting. If you have issues with your hips, it's important to address them as soon as possible to avoid long-term problems. To remedy hip problems, you should try to determine the cause of the issues. If you have chronic hip issues, there are things you can do to alleviate the pain and make the problems more bearable.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess the situation. If you're experiencing acute pain in your hip after an injury, you may have a dislocated joint or bone fracture. If you have dislocated your hip joint, you will likely be unable to use or move the joint. Signs of a hip fracture include swelling, bruising and an inability to bear weight. If you suspect you have either, see your doctor immediately.

    • 2

Listen to any sounds your hip joint makes when you move it. If you hear a clicking sound, it may be a sign of a labral tear. A labral tear occurs when the hip joint's cartilage is ripped.

    • 3

Consider your activity level. If you are quite active, your hip problem may be due to bursitis. Bursitis occurs when fluid sacs around your hip joint become inflamed. To treat bursitis, you must rest the hip joint.

    • 4

Be aware that degenerative conditions can lead to hip problems. Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis involve joint deterioration and commonly affect the hip joints. Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis; however, you can treat the symptoms with rest, stretches and exercise.

    • 5

See a doctor. Your doctor can determine the exact cause of your hip problems and then advise you on steps to alleviate the issues. Oftentimes, doctors perform various tests, such as X-rays and MRIs, to confirm their diagnoses.

    • 6

Visit a physical therapist. Physical therapists can help you regain range of motion in your hips. Whether your hip problems are due to an injury or a permanent condition, you can gain improved movement and decreased pain with regular physical therapy.

    • 7

Rest. If a particular activity causes hip pain or exacerbates your hip problems, stop doing it. Allow your hips time to rest and recover before engaging in strenuous activities. You can also apply ice packs to the area if you experience swelling.
