Signs of Rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that causes the rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle cells or tissue which may release proteins, enzymes and electrolytes into the bloodstream. Many of these can cause kidney damage and may lead to complete kidney failure. Rhabdomyolysis is caused by physical injury such as occurs in car crashes, chemical factors like drug abuse, infections and metabolic disorders. Identifying the signs of Rhabdomyolysis is important in finding the right treatment.
  1. Identification

    • Signs of Rhabdomyolysis can be elusive because they often mimic other symptoms. Any unusual physical changes must be reported to a doctor.

    Abnormal Urine

    • Odd or abnormally colored urine (e.g. dark red or cola colored) may signal the onset of Rhabdomyolysis.

    Muscle Symptoms

    • Unusual or unexplained muscle stiffness, weakness and tenderness are common signs of Rhabdomyolysis.

    Nausea

    • Sudden nausea followed by vomiting may occur in cases of Rhabdomyolysis.

    Other Signs

    • Rhabdomyolysis can also cause pain in the body joints, extreme fatigue and unintentional weight gain.

    Seizures

    • Rarely, Rhabdomyolysis may cause seizures in patients without a prior seizure history and must be reported to a doctor right away.
