Diets for Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is a term used to describe abnormal changes to the spinal column due to age. Degenerative disc disease can include a loss of tissue in between the spinal bones, a broken or swollen spinal disc, and problems with the spinal nerves. Many consider degenerative disc disease to be a society-induced and diet-induced problem, and have found that dietary changes can treat and even reverse degenerative disc disease. Here are a few simple guidelines.
  1. Increase Animal Protein

    • Animal protein is high in amino acids that help to build, repair and strengthen bones and teeth. You should increase intake of muscle tissues, organ meats and bone marrow.

    Reduce Sugar

    • Sugar increases the release of cortisol and adrenalin in the body, which can weaken the bones and ligaments over time. Decrease or eliminated sugary foods and drinks from your diet.

    Increase Fatty Fish

    • Eating more fatty fish that contain the Omega fatty acids, such as salmon and halibut, can help support the tendons and ligaments. Increase your intake of fatty fish and it will strengthen the tendon and ligaments that attach to the spinal bones.

    Increase Animal Fats

    • Increasing animal fats, and decreasing artificial fats, can make animal proteins and amino acids more bio available to the body. Fats found in fatty fish, such as salmon, are the healthiest animal fats to eat.

    Decrease Refined Carbohydrates

    • Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, white breads, white rice and white potatoes, immediately turn to sugar in your system and raise he blood sugar. This increases the cortisol and adrenalin in your body, which harms the spinal column over time.
