Unusual Symptoms of TMJ

Besides the more common symptoms of pain or locking located in the jaw, trouble chewing, an uneven bite or headaches that are often linked to TMJ, there are some unusual symptoms that a person with a temporomandibular joint disorder may experience. These symptoms aren't always isolated to the affected area. People who suffer from this condition may well experience a symptom in a neighboring area of the body.
  1. Ringing in the Ears

    • Some people who suffer from TMJ may experience a symptom that is often referred to as tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ears.

    Shoulder Pain

    • On occasion, a person with TMJ may suffer a pain that is isolated to one of his shoulders. This sometimes happens in more severe cases of TMJ where the strain runs down the neck and into this area of the body.

    Swelling

    • Depending on the intensity, some people have been known to experience a certain amount of swelling in the cheek and jaw. This will usually be located toward the side of the face that is currently being affected.

    Popping

    • Though not uncommon, a person suffering with TMJ may begin to hear the unusual symptom of a popping or cracking sound when moving the jaw.

    Vertigo

    • Some people with TMJ have also complained of a symptom that would best be described as a vertigo sensation. It manifests as a slight spinning that usually brings about both a dizziness and lightheadedness.
