How to Naturally Maintain Good Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones take on a frail nature, making them much more easily to break. However, there are ways of naturally maintaining your bone health and avoiding osteoporosis.

Consume lots of calcium. Calcium is extremely important to bone health and lessening your chances for osteoporosis. Although calcium is found in cow's milk, the body can absorb it best when you eat dark green leafy vegetables, salmon, sardines and many nuts and seeds (all of these foods contain appropriate levels of calcium). It is recommended that you consume at least 800 to 1200 mg of calcium per day, depending on your age and health.

Consider the consumption of boron. If you have a condition that cause your bones to not hold on to calcium like it should, seek out more boron. Boron is a naturally occurring element that helps keep calcium in your bones, making them more resistant to fracture. Boron can be found in many fruits and veggies such as pears, nuts, grapes and carrots, to name a few. It is recommended that you consume about 2 to 5 mg of boron per day.

Avoid things that deplete your bones of calcium. Endocrine disorders (diabetes type 1 and 2), smoking and alcohol, for instance, can rob you of your overall bone health. If you have diabetes, keep it under control. If you smoke or drink, try to quit or cut back.
