How to Treat Bone Bruises

Bone bruises are painful injuries that nearly fracture a bone but not quite. They can be seen on MRIs and require a good deal of time to recover from. Bone bruises can feel like fractures or breaks because they are painful to the touch and make movement difficult. But unlike a break or fracture a boen bruise cannot be set in a cast or splint, it takes more time and effort to heal.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the area to determine if it's a bone bruise. A bone bruise is typically swollen, painful to the touch and sometimes has some minor visible red, green and purple bruising.

    • 2

Ice the area with an ice pack or pack of frozen vegetables. Hold ice on the area for five to ten minutes at a time, three times an hour for as long as needed.

    • 3

Take an over-the-counter pain killer to cope with discomfort and pain in daily activities. Follow the directions and recommendations listed on the bottle.

    • 4

Perform reflexology on your feet or hands depending upon where you bone bruise is. Reflexology is targeting massaging that is supposed to relieve pain in specific areas. Do reflexology on yourself or go to a reflexologist whenever you are in extreme or constant pain.

    • 5

Rest. Try as much as possible, not to use the area where the bone bruise is. Take it easy and avoid exercise, sports and contact as much as you can. Rest is the most important part of recovery. Good luck and take care!
