How to Stretch Before Breakdancing

Breakdancing was a popular style of dance back in the 1980s. It has seen a resurgence partly because of television game shows and films. As fun as it looks, breakdancing takes a lot of practice and heavy physical demand on muscles, joints and back because of the start-stop style in positions mostly unfamiliar to the body. This article will describe important stretching you need to do before break dancing.

  1. How To Stretch Before Breakdancing

    • 1

Your first stretch is going to be your wrists. Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart and arms pointing down. While keeping your arms straight, simultaneously rotate your wrists in an outward circle (left wrist counter clockwise; right wrist clockwise). Do this 20 times and then rotate them inward.

    • 2

Spread your legs just beyond your shoulders and slowly get into a squat position with your arms straight in front of you. Imagine if you were on a race horse galloping for the finish, holding onto the reins. Hold this position for three seconds and then return to standing. Count to three and repeat the step again ten times. On the tenth repetition, lower your body with your glutes on the floor, knees bent and feet flat on the ground.

    • 3

While on the ground, stretch one leg straight forward and rotate your ankle clockwise 20 times and then counter clockwise. Repeat with the opposite leg.

    • 4

Get on all fours and perform the catch stretch. Keep your arms under your shoulders. Arch your back upwards for a count of five and then towards the ground for a count of five. Repeat 10 times.

    • 5

Get into a standing position and bounce lightly on your toes for 10 seconds. Transition this bouncing into 10 jumping jacks. Return to bouncing on your toes for 10 seconds and then do 10 more jumping jacks.
