How to Treat Metatarsalgia
The metatarsals are five bones in the foot that are located just below the toes. Metatarsalgia, which is sometimes called "ball-of-the-foot pain," is a condition that is characterized by pain in this area. It is most commonly seen in people who are involved in high-impact sports like basketball or running. Follow these steps if you have metatarsalgia.Instructions

1
Take a break. You will need to rest your feet for awhile so that the pain and inflammation associated with metatarsalgia can subside.
-
2
Apply ice to the painful area. This will also reduce swelling and inflammation, which will, in turn, reduce the pain.
-
3
Put shock absorbing insoles or arch supports in your shoes. Wearing shoes with no padding increases the chances of getting metatarsalgia. High heels should be avoided if you have this condition.

See your doctor if the pain does not subside in a few days. A podiatrist can determine if you do have metatarsalgia and can suggest some more aggressive treatments. If left untreated, metatarsalgia can cause you to lose range of motion and can even lead to avascular necrosis, death of bone tissue caused by poor blood supply.
