Dr. Ranjit Mani, a neurologist and medical reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration's Division of Neurology Products, says, "The goal is to rule out factors that are potentially reversible." Some general causes affecting memory and concentration issues include increased stress or anxiety, insomnia, or other sleep problems such as snoring or sleep apnea. Depression, heredity, an overindulgence in alcohol and even aging can be factors.
Uncommon Factors

Other cause are not as common. These include prescribed or over-the-counter medications, sudden changes in thyroid hormone levels, allergies or intolerances to foods, or deficiencies in certain vitamins, such as iron, thiamin (B 1) and B 12.
Prevention

Ways to improve brain function may include exercise at least four times a week; healthy eating that includes vitamins good for memory; meditation or other relaxation techniques; and getting a good night's sleep. Exercise your brain by reading, doing puzzles and interacting with others.
