Can pressure on the Vagus Nerve cause a blackout?

Pressure on the vagus nerve, especially in the carotid sinus, can sometimes lead to a temporary loss of consciousness or a blackout. This reflex response, also known as a carotid sinus syndrome or carotid sinus syncope, occurs when the carotid sinus, located in the neck, is overly stimulated, leading to a sudden decrease in heart rate and blood pressure, which can result in a brief period of unconsciousness. When pressure is applied to the carotid sinus, such as during a tight collar, coughing, or even turning the neck in a certain way, it can trigger the carotid sinus reflex, causing a temporary blackout or fainting.
