Are spinal nerves grouped and named according to their function?
Spinal nerves are not grouped and named according to their function. Instead, they are grouped and named according to the region of the spinal cord from which they emerge. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves, which are divided into five regions: cervical (8 pairs), thoracic (12 pairs), lumbar (5 pairs), sacral (5 pairs), and coccygeal (1 pair). Each spinal nerve is named after the region of the spinal cord from which it emerges, followed by a number indicating its position within that region. For example, the first cervical spinal nerve is called the C1 nerve, and the fifth lumbar spinal nerve is called the L5 nerve.
