Circulatory SystemThe circulatory system is a network of blood vessels that transport blood throughout the body. It comprises the heart, blood,, and blood vessels. The heart acts as a pump, propelling blood through the vessels, supplying essential nutrients and oxygen to the body's cells, while carrying away waste products like carbon dioxide. The circulatory system is pivotal maintaining the body's functioning, as follows;
Components of the Circulatory System:
1. Heart: The heart is a vital muscular organ located in the chest. It consists of four chambers -two atria (left and right) and two ventricles (left and right).
> * Atria: The atria receive the blood coming back to the heart from the venous circulation. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body, while the left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.
> * Ventricles: The ventricles pump the oxygenated blood out of the heart into the body's arteries. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the entire body, except the lungs, while the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
2. Blood Vessels:
* Arteries: Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body's tissues.
> * Veins: Veins carry the deoxygenated blood from the body's tissues back to the heart.
> * Capillaries: Capillaries are tiny ,thin-walled blood vessels that connects the arteries and veins, allowing for the exchange of nutrients, oxygen ,and waste products between blood and tissues.
3.Blood: Blood is a fluid that circulates throughout the body. It consists of several components, including:
> * Red blood cells: Carry oxygen from the lung to the whole body.
> * White blood cells: Involved in the body's immune defence.
> * Platelets: Responsible for blood clotting.
Plasma: The liquid component that make up more than half of the blood's volume. It composed of nutrients hormones, and waste products.
> * Plasma: Liquid component that comprise nutrients, hormones, and waste products.
Functions of the Circulatory System:
> * Transportation of Oxygen and Nutrients: The circulatory system transports oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and organs. Simultaneously, it carries away carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular metabolism, from the tissues back to the lungs.
> * Transportation of Hormones: Hormones produced by endocrine glands are distributed throughout the body via the circulatory system, enabling them to regulate various physiological processes.
> * Temperature Regulation: The circulatory system helps maintain body temperature by distributing heat from the core to the skin, aiding in both body's cooling and warming the extremities.
> * Immune responses: The circulatory system is vital for the immune system to function effectively, circulating white blood cells to help combat infections.
> * Waste Removal: The circulatory system transports waste products, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes (urea), to the kidneys for elimination.
> * Maintenance of Fluid Balance: The circulatory system helps regulate the fluid and electrolyte balance throughout the body, ensuring that cells have the necessary environment to function properly.
