Energy & Brain Chemistry Support While in Recovery
While recovering from illness, an operation or mental health crisis, it is necessary to maintain your energy level as well as a healthy brain chemistry balance. This can be accomplished through attention to nutrition and, if possible, exercise.-
Nutrition
-
Eat healthy. Sugars found in processed foods as well as foods that turn into sugar in your body--such as alcohol and refined flour-- sometimes provide a quick burst of energy but can also drain your body of energy. The chemistry of your brain can be affected, which can contribute to depression and other difficulties.
Exercise
-
Perform some type of exercise daily. This can help both your body, your mind and your energy level. After operations, the Carilion Clinic encourages aerobic exercise such as walking. Walking is good for depression and mood, "and it's free". Dumbell training with light weights can be of value after an operation.
Supplements
-
Many doctors recommend a good multi-vitamin. The American Cancer Society mentions B-complex in connection with energy and depression. Iron supplements can build up blood before and after an operation.
Drug Addiction Recovery
-
The body of a drug addict can often be depleted of needed nutrients, and nutrition may have been neglected. Food high in nutritional value is needed. Avoid coffee and other high-caffeine drinks. Try to eat whole grains, and by all means, avoid any alcohol.
