Medicine for Hypomania

Hypomania is a mood disorder that resembles mania, but symptoms are less severe. Hypomania is characterized by decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, elevated mood and increased energy. Treatment for hypomania is similar to treatment for bipolar disorder.
  1. Types of Medication

    • Types of medication prescribed for hypomania include mood stabilizers and anti-seizure medication. According to the Mayo Clinic, antidepressants are not usually prescribed for this condition, except in combination with a mood stabilizer, because they may trigger manic episodes.

    Mood Stabilizers

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, mood stabilizers are usually the first type of medication prescribed for mood disorders including hypomania. The most often prescribed mood stabilizer is Lithium.

    Anti-Seizure Medication

    • Medications used to prevent seizures are also used to control mood swings. These medications include Depakote, Depakene and Lamictal.

    Other Types of Medication

    • If anti-seizure medication isn't helpful, atypical antipsychotic medications are sometimes prescribed to prevent mood swings. Examples are Zyprexa and Risperdal. For difficulty sleeping, anti-anxiety medications are sometimes prescribed.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Lifestyle changes can help to prevent or reduce manic episodes. Avoid sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Take all medications as directed. Track your moods and daily activity to see if you can identify triggers and to help your doctor understand the effects of treatment.
