Tests for Vertigo
Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness. It's different than being lightheaded. People who experience vertigo feel as if the room is spinning. A variety of tests are performed to determine the cause of this sensation, which is hard to pinpoint.-
CT Scan
-
To rule out a brain tumor and other serious conditions, a CT scan of the head may be recommended.
Balance
-
Different balance tests are another way to determine a possible cause. The patient may be asked to bend over in different positions, or placed upside down on a vertical board to see if these positions trigger vertigo.
Eye Movement
-
Another test measures eye movement with the assessment of two nerves. One nerve connects the brain and the ears, and the other connects the brain and the eyes. This test can determine if there are balance and hearing problems.
Blood Test
-
A complete blood panel is often recommended to look at any underlying conditions that might be present to cause the vertigo.
Water in the Ears
-
Water is put in each ear, one ear at a time, first cold water, then warm water. This will cause rapid eye movement at different speeds depending on the temperature of the water. If there is no eye movement, it could indicate nerve damage to the ear or other more serious conditions.
