Differences Between the Left & Right Side of the Brain

Though symmetrical to the eye, the left and right sides of the brain control very different functions. The left hemisphere utilizes a systematic method to break down stimuli so an individual can arrive at a conclusion. Conversely, the right hemisphere builds toward viable solutions through emotions and perceptions when processing the same stimuli.

Language

• The left hemisphere controls language and speech. Damage specifically to Broca's area--located on the left frontal side of the brain--severely impairs a person's ability to speak while damage incurred on the mirror image area on the right hemisphere is significantly less grim.

Analysis

• The left hemisphere allows a person to process new information in a meticulous organization and analysis. Left-brain thinkers tend to accomplish tasks by the book, with little or no room for bending much less breaking set rules.

Creativity

• The right hemisphere shines in the area of creativity. There is always a healthy spectrum of possibilities to exercise as right-brain thinkers work through and finish tasks.

Relationships

• The right hemisphere allows a person to consider their relationships with others as they work to solve or resolve any given problem or situation. Emotions and insights also come into play during the problem-solving process.

Quality vs. Quantity

• Left-brain thinkers come to conclusions armed with supporting facts and data. The right side of the brain allows a person to incorporate reason into forming a solution or accomplish a task at hand.
