Signs & Symptoms of Temporal Lobe Seizures

Possibly caused by defects, temporal lobe seizures remain a very serious condition and do not always respond to medicine. Surgery may be a viable option but it's important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a temporal lobe seizure from the onset.
  1. Auras

    • The Mayo Clinic says one of the most common symptoms of an oncoming temporal lobe seizure tends to be an aura, or experiencing an odd sensation, such as intense déjà vu, a strong sense of irrational fear or the appearance of an unusual taste or odor.

    Dazed State

    • Although temporal lobe seizures last anywhere from 30 seconds to two minutes, the symptoms during a seizure can be quite prominent, including entering a dazed state or a loss of short-term memory.

    Swallowing and Chewing

    • Temporal lobe seizures can also produce such jarring symptoms as constant swallowing, chewing and smacking of the lips.

    Hand Movements

    • Those experiencing such a seizure may also begin making distinctly mannered hand movements, such as a picking motion with their fingers.

    Inability to Speak

    • After a temporal lobe seizure, some may be unable to speak while battling a state of extreme confusion.
