Dilantin Drug Side Effects

Dilantin (phenytoin sodium) is an anti-seizure medication used to prevent grand mal seizures and partial seizures. It is available as an oral capsule or an injection administrated by a health care professional. Taking Dilantin with food may help lessen side effects.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects of Dilantin include allergic reactions, high blood sugar, slurred speech, stomach pain, tender gums, yellowing of the skin and eyes, or bone pain. If any of these should occur, seek medical attention immediately.

    Interactions

    • Dilantin is known to interact with certain medications. Tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking before taking Dilantin. Dilantin may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills and other hormonal contraceptives.

    Pregnancy

    • Taking Dilantin while pregnant increases the risk of birth defects in an unborn fetus. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should seek medical advice before taking Dlantin.
