Brain Lobes & Functions

The brain is a central nervous system organ that coordinates different bodily functions, including movement, speech, memory, emotions and sleep. The part of the brain that is responsible for higher thinking is the cerebrum, which is divided into four lobes.
  1. Hemispheres

    • The four lobes of the brain are found in two cerebral hemispheres, which are located in the right and left parts of the brain. Grooves and bumps in the brain, known as sulci and gyri, divide the different lobes in the brain.

    Frontal Lobe

    • Found in the front of the brain, the frontal lobe is the center for emotions and personality. It also helps to coordinate motor functions, problem solving, reasoning, planning, memory, language, judgment, control of impulses, and social and sexual behavior.

    Parietal Lobe

    • Found in the middle of the brain behind the central sulcus, the parietal lobe has two regions that respond to sensory input. The parietal lobe coordinates perception and recognition of stimuli and parts of movement.

    Occipital Lobe

    • Located in the back part of the brain behind the parietal and temporal lobes, the occipital lobe is responsible for visual perception functions. It helps the body to recognize color and movement.

    Temporal Lobe

    • Located in the front of the brain below the lateral fissure, the temporal lobe is responsible for the recognition of visual and auditory input and language. It is also involved in the coordination of memory.
