Dizziness, or vertigo, is a physical sense that a person and their environment are spiraling causing loss of balance, nausea, headaches, vision and hearing difficulties. Dizziness can also be a result of anxiety or stress with chest tightness and sweaty palms being the side effects from that. One commonality is that most people who have vertigo are quite concerned about it and worried that it will strike at an inopportune moment.
  1. Causes of Dizziness

    • Dizziness can be caused by disorders that can have a negative effect on the brain stem which manages posture and the cerebellum which controls balance. That is why dizziness is especially felt when a person tries to stoop. It also affects the nerves that connect to these areas of the brain. Information is processed in the brain stem and controls the posture. It can also cause problems in the inner ear which is an aid to the body in sensing movement and location. Many times motion sickness is the culprit behind dizziness. Another cause can be irregular assortment of calcium particles in the semicircular canal in the inner ear. It seems to affect older people more. Meniere's disease can also result in moments of dizziness, especially while bending and looking down. It is caused by too much fluid in the inner ear or a blockage. It is could be caused by an allergy, an autoimmune disease, an imbalance in the nervous system, or a viral infection. Drugs may also have a negative affect and cause dizziness such as aspirin, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, alcohol, antipsychotic drugs, or chemotherapy drugs.

    Types of Testing For Dizziness

    • It is important to see a doctor to find out the source of the dizziness. They will check the eyes for movements that appear abnormal. It can indicate that there is a problem that is affecting the connections of the nerves in the brain or the inner ear. They can also do a magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) or a tomography(CT). It can be a thorough indication in finding the root of the dizziness. If an ear infection is indicated, they will most likely take a sample to find out the cause. A spinal tap will be done if a brain infection is suspected.

    Treatment For Dizziness

    • Dizziness while stooping or in other capacities can be prevented depending on the cause of it. Hypnotherapy can be a valuable aid. A scopolamine patch can be used to help offset the vertigo. Other drugs that help with the dizziness and nausea and can be taken by mouth are diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine, meclizine, promethazine, dimenhydrinate and cyclizine. If it is an especially severe case then sedatives may be helpful. However, it all needs to be under the watchful eye of your doctor.
