Peripheral neuropathy is a condition in which nerve damage has occurred, causing pain, numbness and tingling in areas of the body. Peripheral neuropathy most often occurs in the hands and feet. There are many causes of neuropathy, but sometimes the cause is unknown and referred to as "idiopathic." Schedule a physical exam with your doctor to discuss your foot pain. He will examine you to determine that neuropathy is the cause of your pain. He may run blood tests to rule out underlying conditions such as diabetes.

Take over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen to reduce the foot pain you feel as a result of your idiopathic neuropathy. If these medicines are not enough to relieve your pain, your doctor may prescribe stronger drugs. Tricyclic antidepressant medications reduce neuropathic foot pain in some people.

Apply a medicated patch to the areas of your foot in which you feel pain. Lidocaine is often used as a topical treatment for peripheral neuropathy and can be safely used two to three times daily with adverse effects.

Exercise if you are able. Many people who experience pain as the primary symptom of peripheral neuropathy feel better when they are physically active, say the experts at the Mayo Clinic.

Massage your painful feet. Manual stimulation of the nerves in your feet may give you some relief.

Wear comfortable footwear. Cotton socks that are loose and allow your feet to breathe may make a difference. Shoes should lend correct support to your foot and not be too tight. Avoid pointed heels and other shoes that are unstable.
