How to Improve Your Brain's Health

Improving brain health is necessary in order to help your brain stay sharp even into old age. With Alzheimer's disease cases on the rise, brain health has become an important part of staying healthy. There are many ways to keep the brain healthy, and many require very little work. Here are a few tips on keeping your brain healthy.

      Get lots of physical exercise. Set initial goals that you know you can achieve, such as walking for 15 minutes each day. After 1 week, increase the time to 20 minutes and the next week increase it to 30 minutes per day. Once you get into a walking routine, add other exercises into your routine.

      Do mental exercises. This includes reading, crossword puzzles, word finds or other brain teases. Do a variety of things to keep your brain active, rather than doing just one thing. For example, do a crossword puzzle one day, and read the next.

      Eat a nutritious diet. Eating foods rich in Omega-3's will help increase brain health. Fish is a great way to get Omega-3's. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Blueberries are a great brain food. Eat correct portion sizes so that over-eating is not a factor. Eat vegetables that are leafy and dark green, such as spinach.

      Learn to manage your stress properly. You can manage stress by exercising, getting an adequate amount of sleep each night, staying in touch with family and friends, and doing relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation or taking a bath.
