Descriptions of Seizures Due to Brain Tumor
Brain tumors are a serious medical condition that can cause many unpleasant and dangerous symptoms. One of these symptoms is seizures.-
Types
-
According to the American Brain Tumor Association, there are two types of seizures that brain tumor patients may experience. These are called Focal and Grand Mal seizures.
Causes
-
Seizures are caused by an abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Tumors are made up of abnormal cells. These cells generate abnormal electrical activity which will disrupt the normal brain activity, causing the seizures.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of grand mal seizures include uncontrollable jerking of the limbs, convulsions, confusion and loss of consciousness. Focal seizures cause symptoms such as muscle twitching, abnormal smells, slurred speech and numbness.
Statistics
-
Statistics gathered by the Brain Science Foundation show that 90 percent of patients with ganglioglioma tumors will experience seizures. Other types of tumors, such as glioma and miningioma, cause seizures in nearly 50 percent of patients.
Treatment
-
In some cases, the seizures may be stopped by removing the tumor. If the tumor is not removable, seizures are treated with anti-seizure medications.
