The Proper Application of an Arm Sling

An arm sling is used to help immobilize an injured arm as a result of a broken bone or sprain. A sling helps to prevent further injury, as well as prevent inflammation and swelling.
  1. Application

    • Your injured arm slides into the sling, with your hand facing out and your elbow touching the pocket of the sling, as indicated by the Ohio State University. The sling should partially cover your little finger. The sling strap should be positioned over your uninjured shoulder.

    Adjustment

    • Your hand on the injured arm should be elevated slightly higher than your elbow. Straps on the sling can be used to adjust the height of your arm. If your sling has a shoulder pad, this can be strapped into place, to prevent the sling from cutting into your shoulder.

    Warning

    • Your sling should be adjusted when you feel tingling or numbing of your fingers. Ensuring that the sling is smoothed out--instead of being wrinkled--can prevent irritation and sore spots on your skin.
