Underarm Vs. Forearm Crutches

If you are a first-time user of crutches, you should be aware of the difference between underarm and forearm crutches. Both styles will require practice for true mobility, but each offers different advantages.
  1. Underarm crutches

    • Also called auxiliary crutches, this type is generally most familiar. They are typically made of wood with a rubber pad placed under your arm.

    Forearm crutches

    • Forearm crutches can be thought of as a walking cane with a cuff that fits slightly below your elbow and a handle. This type is usually made of a lightweight aluminum or similar metal.

    Choosing

    • Underarm crutches are most commonly used by persons with temporary injuries, whereas forearm crutches are intended for longer periods.

    Prices

    • Underarm crutches can be purchased for approximately half the price of forearm crutches.

    Uses

    • Both types are used in the same manner.
