According to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), for a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa, a person must exhibit recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by inappropriate compensatory behavior, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other medications, fasting, or excessive exercise to prevent weight gain. These episodes must occur, on average, at least once a week for a period of at least three months.
