What are the types of bulimia?
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging, fasting, or excessive exercise. There are two types of bulimia nervosa: purging type and non-purging type.
Purging type bulimia nervosa is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other medications, or excessive exercise.
Non-purging type bulimia nervosa is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors other than purging, such as fasting or excessive exercise.
Both types of bulimia nervosa can have serious physical and psychological consequences, including dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, heart problems, gastrointestinal problems, dental problems, and depression. Treatment for bulimia nervosa typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, nutrition counseling, and medication.
