What is the hiccups and burp?

Hiccups and burps are two common physiological phenomena that occur in humans. Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, causing a sudden spasmodic intake of air and producing a characteristic "hic" sound. They can be caused by various factors, including irritation of the vagus or phrenic nerves, rapid eating or drinking, carbonated beverages, or sudden temperature changes. Hiccups are usually transient and self-resolving, but persistent hiccups (lasting more than 48 hours) may require medical attention.

On the other hand, burping, also known as eructation, is the voluntary or involuntary release of gas from the stomach through the mouth. It occurs when air or excess gas accumulates in the stomach, often due to swallowing air while eating or drinking, chewing gum, or consuming certain foods or drinks that produce gas. Burping helps expel this accumulated gas and relieve abdominal discomfort. While occasional burping is normal, frequent or excessive burping may indicate underlying digestive issues and warrant consultation with a healthcare professional.
