How do you get lice out of the house?
To remove and get lice out of the house, follow these steps:
- Vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture, and any area where someone with head lice may have laid their head and remove all bedding, curtains and clothing that may have come in contact with the infested person to the dryer. Then wash all clothing, towels, bedding and curtains in a hot water wash (hot water washes at 55 degrees Celcius or higher). Hot water immersion for at least 10 minutes is also enough to kill lice and their eggs. Be sure to check pockets, collars and seams. Dry clothing and curtains in a dryer on the highest heat that the fabric label will allow for at least 20 minutes.
- Any items that can't be washed or dried on high heat should be sealed inside a plastic bag for at least 72 hours. The lack of a warm host body will kill the lice and nits.
- Soak combs, brushes, and hair accessories in hot water (at least 55°C) for 5-10 minutes, or in isopropyl alcohol for at least 15 minutes. To wash hair brushes and combs, you can also put them in the dishwasher and run a hot water wash cycle.
- Vacuum your home thoroughly, paying particular attention to areas where lice or debris from those with lice might collect.
- Dispose of vacuum bags after each use. Make sure to remove the bag carefully so you do not spill any of the contents. Seal the filled vacuum cleaner bag inside a plastic trash bag and toss it away in the outdoor garbage can immediately after use.
- Continue to check for and remove lice and eggs on all household members at least twice a week for at least 2 weeks.
