How is jaundice spread?
Jaundice is not spread from person to person.
Jaundice is a condition that causes the skin and whites of the eyes to appear yellow. It is a sign of liver disease or a problem with the gallbladder or bile ducts.
Jaundice can be caused by a number of things, including:
- Viral hepatitis: This is the most common cause of jaundice. Hepatitis viruses can damage the liver and cause jaundice.
- Alcoholic liver disease: Drinking too much alcohol can damage the liver and cause jaundice.
- Cirrhosis: This is a condition in which the liver is scarred and damaged. Cirrhosis can be caused by a number of things, including alcohol abuse, hepatitis, and certain genetic conditions.
- Bile duct obstruction: This can be caused by gallstones, tumors, or other conditions that block the flow of bile from the liver to the intestines.
- Certain medications: Some medications can cause jaundice as a side effect.
