How to Ease Bunion Pain
A bunion is a bump that emerges on the side of the big toe. This occurs when the big toe starts to lean toward the other toes. Bunions can be painful, but there are several home remedies to ease the pain.-
Ice Packs and Heating Pads
-
Using ice packs and heating pads can relieve some of the inflammation caused by the bunion. Heating pads can increase the flow of blood to the foot. Ice packs should not be used if the individual has any circulation problems in his or her feet or if they are a diabetic.
Pain Medication
-
Taking aspirin or other pain relief medications can temporarily ease some of the bunion pain. These can be prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Always remember to follow the directions as instructed.
Warm Water Soaks
-
For temporary relief, soaking the feet in warm water for about 10 minutes can be helpful. Adding epsom salts can be soothing as well.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
-
Wearing well-fitted shoes can also help to relieve any bunion pain. It is best to wear soft shoes, such as leather or suede shoes, because they are bendable and can accommodate the shape of the bunion.
Surgery
-
For longtime relief, bunion removal surgery may be an option. Bunion surgery normally takes about 30 minutes to complete. In about two to three days, the patient should be able to walk on that foot again.
