How to Treat a Third Degree Burn at Home

Third-degree burns, also known as full-thickness burns, involve all three layers of the skin with complete destruction of all epidermal and dermal structures. The dermal layer of the skin are responsible for tissue regeneration, therefore these injuries will not heal without surgical repair or skin grafting in some cases. Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that the victim is not longer exposed to smoke, heat, or burning materials. Ensure that you are both out of danger before proceeding to manage the victim's burns.

    • 2

Call 911 and describe the situation to the emergency dispatcher.

    • 3

Check to make sure the patient is breathing and their heart is pumping. Look for signs of active circulation and respiration, which include coughing and voluntary movement. If none of these signs are present, administer CPR. Burns do not become a priority until you confirm that the patient has a heartbeat and is breathing.

    • 4

Elevate the burn above the heart if possible. This will reduce the risk of the patient developing shock, or an unsafe drop in blood pressure.

    • 5

Cover the burn with a sterile bandage. Moisten the cloth with cool water.

    • 6

Wait with the patient for medical assistance to arrive.
