Treating a Shock Victim
-
1
Check for signs of shock, which include clammy skin; weak and rapid pulse; shallow, rapid breathing; dizziness and weakness. Low blood pressure is a major sign of shock.
-
2
Call 911 or take the person to the emergency room if symptoms are present. Shock is serious and can lead to death if untreated.
-
3
Place the patient in a prone position with the legs raised about 12 inches above the head. This will help circulation.
-
4
Check the patient's airway, breathing and circulation. These are known as the ABCs of life support. Continue checking every five minutes and begin CPR if the person has trouble breathing.
-
5
Keep the patient warm and loosen all clothing around the neck, waist and extremities.
-
6
Release the shock victim to emergency medical team personnel, who will administer fluids through an IV and give medications that will raise the patient's blood flow.
