What Is Caustic Ointment?
-
Historical Use
-
Documents from medical practitioners, dating back to the 19th century, mention the use of caustic ointment. Its application was suggested in relation to such diverse ailments as lupus and gonorrhea. In current medical literature, Stephen M. Barrett, M.D. has strongly discouraged the use of corrosives such as caustic ointment in the treatment of external tumors.
Use On Animals
-
Caustic ointment has been used in a number of animal related contexts. Two of the most prominent are in equestrian racing and rodeos. In the case of the former, the ointment was applied above the horse's hooves or under the saddle. This proves an extreme irritant and forces the horse to run faster. Rodeo bulls may be given the ointment to antagonize them before a bout.
Controversy
-
Due to its controversial use on animals, caustic ointment has been derided by groups like Mercy for Animals and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. This is one of the reasons why so many pet care providers so strongly market their ointments as non-caustic. There can be some limited uses for caustic powder in relation to wounds on horses.
