How do you care for 2 degree burns?
1. Cool the burn immediately.- For small, minor burns, quickly submerge the affected area in cool (not cold) water or run cool water over it for at least 20 minutes. For larger, more severe burns, apply a cold, wet cloth or towel to the area.
- Avoid using ice, which can cause further tissue damage.
2. Gently clean the burn.
- Once the burn has been cooled, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and mild soap. Be careful not to scrub or break the skin.
- Remove any jewelry, watches, or clothing from around the burned area to avoid constriction as swelling may occur.
3. Apply a clean bandage.
- After cleaning the burn, cover it with a clean, non-stick bandage. This will help to protect the burn from infection and promote healing.
- Change the bandage daily or as needed.
4. Take over-the-counter pain relievers.
- To help relieve pain, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).
- Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers, as it can cause Reye's syndrome, a serious illness.
5. Elevate the burned area.
- Elevating the burned area can help to reduce swelling and pain.
6. Watch for signs of infection.
- Some signs of infection include:
- Increased pain
- Swelling
- Redness
- Drainage
- Fever
Seek medical attention if:
- The burn is larger than 2 inches in diameter.
- The burn is on the face, hands, feet, or genitals.
- The burn is deep or charred.
- The burn is not healing properly.
- You have any signs of infection.
