How do you treat creosote burn on skin?

First aid tips:

- Run cool or body temperature water over the affected area for 15 to 30 minutes.

- Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Ice can cause frostbite.

- You may need to remove clothing and jewelry contaminated with creosote.

- Loosely bandage the affected area with a clean, dry cloth or bandage. Do not wrap it too tightly as this can cut off blood flow.

- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

- If your eyes or mouth have come into contact with creosote, seek medical attention immediately.

- If the pain, redness, or swelling on your skin does not improve after a couple of hours or if blistering or signs of infection develop, see a doctor.

Home treatment:

- For pain use cool compresses or cold water soaks in a sink or tub for up to 10 minutes.

- Use plain oatmeal, a paste made with baking soda and water, an antihistamine cream or balm that contains pramoxine to minimize itching.

Don’ts

- Don't scrub or rub the burn wound as it can cause further irritation.

- Don't apply over-the-counter antibiotic cream or ointment unless your doctor recommends it.

- Don't break blisters that have formed as this may increase your risk of an infection.
