How do you treat a CO2 Burn?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) burns, also called dry ice burns, occur when the skin comes into contact with solid CO2. CO2 burns can cause tissue damage and frostbite.

Treatment for CO2 burns:

1. Remove the CO2 source. Get the person away from the CO2 and remove any clothing or jewelry that may be constricting the affected area.

2. Flush the affected area with lukewarm water. Do this for at least 15 minutes.

3. Apply a cold compress. This will help to reduce pain and swelling.

4. Cover the affected area with a clean, dry bandage. This will help to protect the area from infection.

5. Take over-the-counter pain relievers. These can help to relieve pain and inflammation.

6. Elevate the affected area. This will help to reduce swelling.

7. See a doctor if the burn is severe. Severe burns may require medical treatment, such as antibiotics or surgery.

Prevention:

The best way to prevent CO2 burns is to avoid contact with solid CO2. If you must come into contact with solid CO2, wear protective clothing and gloves.
