What to Use for Turf Burns

Mild Cleanser

Sliding directly against turf collects bacteria and grit along with causing a turf burn. A gentle, massaging application of mild hand soap or cleanser on the burned skin prevents any sediment or surface bacteria from settling inside the tender, exposed flesh. Avoid using alcohol or soap with heavy fragrance, as this will cause severe stinging and could inflame the skin further. Rinse the wounded skin with cool water and pat it dry with a paper towel.
Healing Ointment

Antibacterial ointments expedite cell growth by eliminating the bacteria on the surface. Fighting off infection delays the regrowth of your skin cells; eliminating the bacteria allows your body to focus all its energy on regrowing healthy skin. Spread an antibacterial ointment over the entire affected surface with a cotton pad or swab after every cleansing. Avoid touching the burn with your fingers to prevent irritation and infection.
Dry Bandages

Keeping the turf-burned skin clean, covered and slightly moist with ointment creates the optimum environment for regenerating skin cells. A flexible, slightly absorbent cover over your turf burn protects the skin while drawing draining fluids away from the healing surface. If using large bandages, tape the perimeter to the skin to reduce the entry of contaminants and dirt. Change your bandage twice a day, or as often as necessary to keep the skin clean and dry.
Protective Apparel

Turf-burned skin lacks any natural protective layer, making proper apparel all the more necessary. While your burn heals, and even after removing the bandages, cover your wound completely with clothing made from smooth, wicking fiber like high-tech nylon. High-tech workout clothing won't rub harshly against your skin and its wicking ability will keep moisture from settling inside the burn.
