How to Care for Third-Degree Burns

Third-degree burns are the most serious of the three types of burns. They are commonly caused by flames from a fire, scalding hot liquid or chemicals. Third-degree burns destroy both the outer layer of skin and the layer underneath, called the dermis. They also cause permanent tissue damage and even damage to bone, muscle and fat. Areas that have third-degree burns appear white and charred. There may not be pain initially, as the nerve centers are damaged. Due to how serious a third-degree burn is, caring for them properly is crucial.

Instructions

    • 1

Get medical help right away. Either go directly to the hospital or dial 911 for an emergency unit. Do whichever is faster, depending on your location. While waiting for the ambulance or to go to the hospital, there are other things that you should and should not do to care for the third-degree burn.

    • 2

Keep any clothing stuck to or covering the burn in place as you get the patient to the hospital; do not try to remove it. Do not apply any water or cream directly to the burns. Raise the burned parts of the body above the heart, unless trying to do so hurts the person suffering from the burn.

    • 3

Moisten a sterile bandage or clean cloth with warm water. Place it over the third-degree burn. Use as many as needed to cover the area. This should only be done if there are not clothes covering the burn. Do this just before going to the hospital.

    • 4

Discuss the best options with the doctor treating the patient. Each burn is different. The treatment of third-degree burns may involve intensive intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Treatment for severe third-degree burns may require skin grafting.
