Difference Between 1st & 3rd Degree Burns

Burns can be caused by heat, sunlight, electricity, chemicals or radiation. They are categorized by degrees with first degree burns being the least severe and third degree being much more severe. Each has its own severity, length of healing and treatment.
  1. First Degree Description

    • First degree burns affect only the outer layer of skin and can cause pain, redness and swelling. The burn may turn white and peel.

    Third Degree Description

    • Third degree burns affect all the layers of the skin. The skin may look white, charred or black. Since these burns damage the nerves and tissue, the patient may feel little or no pain.

    First Degree Healing and Treatment

    • First degree burns will last three to six days and should be treated with cool water and an antibiotic ointment.

    Third Degree Healing and Treatment

    • Patients with third degree burns should go directly to the hospital for treatment. Do not soak in water, apply any ointment or remove clothing from burn. Third degree burns will take many weeks to heal and will most likely cause scarring.

    Cautions

    • Infection can be a problem with any burns. Do not break blisters or apply butter as this can increase the chance of infection. Do not use ice on burns as this can cause further damage. Be sure to have a tetanus shot every 10 years as burns are susceptible to tetanus.
