Silvadene for Burn Pain

Silvadene, also known in generic form as silver sulfadiazone, is classified as an antimicrobial drug. It is applied topically on second- and third-degree burns to help prevent infection, but is not used to alleviate pain.

    • Silvadene is also prescribed to help in the prevention and treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. According to RxList.com, this medication is effective in treating gram-negative, gram-positive and yeast infections.

    Side Effects

    • As with all medications, Silvadene has the potential to cause side effects. The most common side effects are burning, redness and an irritated feeling around the injured area.

    Precautions

    • Silvadene can cause adverse reactions during administration with patients who have liver, kidney or blood disorders. A health care professional can explain how the benefits outweigh the potential risks during treatment.

    Interactions

    • Before starting treatment with Silvadene, inform the doctor of all medications you are currently taking, including non-prescription drugs. Also, using alcohol or tobacco can reduce the effectiveness of medications; cessation is recommended during healing.

    Warning

    • Silvadene is not recommended for pregnant women who are close to delivery or for infants under the age of two months. Special care should be considered when using on geriatric patients because of limited clinical studies.
