Use of Silvadene With Burns
Silvadene is a brand name for silver sulfadiazine, a prescription cream that is primarily used in the treatment of second- and third-degree burns. In the United States, other brand names for the medication include SSD, SSD AF, and Thermazene, while in other countries it may be known as Dermazin or Flamazine. It is a highly effective anti-bacterial medication that helps prevent infection, and is also available in generic form.-
How to Use Silvadene
-
Silvadene is for external use only, and like all prescription medications, should be strictly used according to the prescription label and your doctor's instructions. Usually Silvadene is used once or twice daily. Wash your hands thoroughly, and wear sterile gloves while you clean the burn area as directed by your doctor. Apply a 1/16th inch thick layer of the cream over the entire burn. You can leave the area uncovered, or you can cover it with a gauze bandage if your doctor approves. You should keep the burn evenly covered with Silvadene at all times, so you will need to reapply it if it rubs off, or after bathing.
Silver sulfadiazine may make your skin more sensitive, so you should wear protective clothing outdoors. Avoid exposing the burn area to direct sunlight, sunlamps or tanning beds.
Precautions and Side Effects
-
Silvadene is a sulfa drug, so if you are allergic to that type of medication, you should not use it. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have ever had a reaction to other sulfa drugs such as Bactrim or Septra. If you have liver disease, kidney disease or the enzyme deficiency known as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), tell your doctor before you use Silvadene.
There is a possibility of interaction between Silvadene and other drugs. Be sure to discuss all medications you are taking with your doctor, both prescription and over-the-counter, as well as vitamins, minerals and health supplements. You should not use Silvadene if you are near the end of a pregnancy, and if you are breast feeding you should tell your doctor before you use it. The medication should not be used on infants, unless specifically directed by your doctor.
Because Silvadene contains silver, you may notice a dark discoloration on treated skin areas or bandages. It may also turn darker in the container. This is a normal reaction that is similar to silverware tarnish, and does not pose a problem or diminish the effectiveness of the medication.
