Burn Scar Treatment

Burn scars are an unwelcome reminder of traumatic accidents. Fortunately, options for ridding the scars are available. The method of treatment largely depends on the severity of the scar, so strategies appropriate for minor burns may not be effective for more severe burns.
  1. Early Measures

    • The action you take while your burn is healing can make a difference in your scar's appearance. One way to minimize a scar is to keep pressure on the burn. Pressure garments are available for this purpose and can help prevent the scar from thickening.

Vitamin K, when used during the healing process, may also help keep minimize a burn scar. This can be applied topically, in a lotion or other moisturizer containing the vitamin, or taken as a supplement.

    Natural Remedies

    • A number of natural remedies can help improve a scar's appearance. Lime juice, for example, can lighten a burn scar when applied topically. Just apply the juice, leave on for 10 minutes, and rinse off. It is very important that the burn is healed entirely before using lime juice or other remedies on the scar.

Crushed papaya, blue yarrow oil, almond oil, olive oil, and fenugreek are other natural treatments. Patience is key with these remedies. The scar will fade very gradually, so do not expect results overnight.

    Removal Creams

    • Another option is removal creams. These should only be used after the burn is healed completely, and they are usually effective only on minor burns. In addition, they often take several weeks or months before showing noticeable results. Research a product before buying and only buy such a product from a very reputable source to be sure that the product is as effective as the company claims.

    Laser Treatment

    • For very severe burns, more drastic measures may be necessary. Laser treatment is one option and can be done under local anesthesia with little discomfort or recovery time. Since the lasers can sometimes cause skin discoloration, it is typically not recommended for those with dark skin.
