How to Soothe a Sunburn With a Milk Compress

The discomfort from mild and moderate sunburns can be easily treated at home with common household products. While there are many aloe-based gels, sprays and lotions that are designed for this purpose, you can save money and a trip to the store by going to your refrigerator for your healing solutions.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture of one part skim milk and four parts cold water in a large bowl. Stir the mixture together well.

    • 2

Add a handful of ice cubes to the liquid and allow it to cool down even more.

    • 3

Soak a washcloth in the mixture. Allow the excess to drip off into the bowl, but do not wring it out.

    • 4

Apply the wet washcloth to the sunburned area. For sunburns covering several areas of the skin, prepare additional washcloths in the same way.

    • 5

When a washcloth begins to feel dry or loses its coolness, soak it in the solution again and re-apply it to the sunburned area.

    • 6

Soak every sunburned area with the milk compress for about 30 minutes. Repeat the process about every four hours for as long as the pain and irritation persists.

    • 7

After each milk compress treatment, rinse the treated areas with cool water. Otherwise, the traces of milk left behind may start to smell.
