How to Treat a Third Degree Burn

A third degree burn is the most serious of all burn types. It involves immediate blistering, severe pain, skin-peeling and is extremely dangerous. All third-degree burns require immediate medical attention. There are, however, certain things that should be done right away to treat a third degree burn on the spot.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop the burning process. If the person is on fire, put them out as quickly as possible. If there is a chemical burn occurring, quickly clean the chemical off of their skin. Whatever the source of the burn, remove it immediately and get the person to a safe location.

    • 2

Avoid contacting the afflicted area with any non-sanitary materials. The burn should be treated just as an open wound would be because it is extremely prone to infection. Make sure to keep it as protected from the environment as possible.

    • 3

Pour cool water over the burn. This will cool the burned area, keeping any further burning from taking place, and remove any dirt or contaminants. Only pour a small amount of water to the area.

    • 4

Keep the person suffering from the burn calm. Due to the intense pain, you may need to restrain the victim to keep them from hurting themselves further or doing anything dangerous.

    • 5

Seek immediate medical attention. The victim of a third degree burn, especially a serious one, needs to be seen by a medical professional as quickly as possible. Call 911 or transport the person to a hospital emergency room immediately.
