Heart Fluttering

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, so the uncomfortable sensation of a heart flutter or heart palpitation may initially startle you. Symptoms of heart flutters include a rise in your heart rate and irregular heartbeats.
  1. Causes

    • A number of factors may cause heart flutters. High levels of stress and hormonal changes, like those associated with pregnancy, are among the most common causes. High intakes of alcohol, nicotine or caffeine also can cause palpitations or make the discomfort more intense.

    Concerns

    • Heart flutters are generally harmless; however, in some cases, the palpitations are a sign of more serious heart defect like arrhythmia. If heart flutters are accompanied by severe chest pain or dizziness, seek medical attention.

    Prevention

    • Lifestyle changes like exercising regularly or practicing relaxation techniques may lower the chances of heart palpitations. Dropping habits like smoking and drinking will also help.
