What can the narrowing of coronary arteries cause?
Angina pectoris: When the coronary arteries narrow, they cannot supply enough blood to the heart muscle. This can cause chest pain, or angina pectoris. Angina pectoris is often described as a pressure, squeezing, or burning sensation in the chest. It can also feel like indigestion.
Myocardial infarction (heart attack): If the coronary arteries become completely blocked, it can cause a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough blood and oxygen. This can damage the heart muscle and lead to heart failure.
Coronary artery disease: Coronary artery disease is the narrowing or hardening of the coronary arteries. Coronary artery disease is a major risk factor for heart attack.
Other heart problems: Coronary artery disease can also lead to other heart problems, such as heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death.
