When working out what should your heart rate be?

Maximum Heart Rate (MHR)

The maximum heart rate is the highest rate at which your heart can safely and accurately contract. It is expressed in beats per minute (bpm).

The MHR is typically estimated using the following formula:

- MHR = 220 - Age

This formula is widely used and works well for most people. However, it may not be accurate for everyone. Some factors that can affect the MHR include:

- Fitness level: Trained athletes may have a higher MHR than untrained individuals.

- Genetics: Some people are naturally born with a higher or lower MHR.

- Medication: Certain medications can affect the heart rate.

- Medical conditions: Some medical conditions can also affect the heart rate.

Target Heart Rate (THR)

The target heart rate is the range of heart rates that is considered safe and beneficial during exercise. It is typically expressed as a percentage of the maximum heart rate (MHR).

The THR is calculated using the following formula:

- THR = MHR x % of Intensity

The % of intensity refers to the level of effort you are putting into your workout. The following are some general guidelines for the % of intensity:

- Low intensity: 50-60% of MHR

- Moderate intensity: 60-70% of MHR

- High intensity: 70-80% of MHR

The target heart rate is a useful tool for monitoring your intensity during exercise. Staying within your target heart rate can help you to burn fat and improve your cardiovascular fitness.

Resting Heart Rate (RHR)

The resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are at rest. It is typically measured first thing in the morning before you get out of bed.

The RHR is a general indicator of your overall fitness. A lower RHR is typically associated with a higher fitness level. The following are some general guidelines for the RHR:

- Excellent: RHR less than 60 bpm

- Good: RHR between 60 and 70 bpm

- Fair: RHR between 70 and 80 bpm
