What percentage of cardiovascular disease and strokes are preventable?

Approximately 90% of cardiovascular disease and strokes are preventable. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 17.9 million people died from cardiovascular diseases in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attacks and strokes. The primary risk factors for cardiovascular disease and strokes are well-known and include tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and harmful use of alcohol, as well as raised blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. By addressing these risk factors, a significant proportion of cardiovascular disease and strokes can be prevented.
